Annotated checklist of the Saturniidae (Lepidoptera, Bombycoidea) of French Guiana, including the taxa collected in Mitaraka (far south-western French Guiana)

This work reports the results of two field trips conducted during the year 2015 under the program “Our Planet Reviewed” in the Mitaraka range (far South of French Guiana). Intensive collecting by light-trapping in this locality of the Parc amazonien de Guyane (PAG) allowed to record 133 species of Saturniidae Boisduval, [1837] (about 67% of the saturniid fauna in French Guiana), including three species newly collected for French Guiana: Hylesia (Hylesia) inducayalex Brechlin & Meister, 2016; Hylesia (Hylesia) ernestonis Strand, 1920 and Dirphia aculea Vuillot, 1892. These new recorded taxa, unknown from the Guiana shield and that could be restricted to the Mitaraka range, are discussed as putative regional endemics. In this paper, a comprehensive list of the Saturniidae of French Guiana is moreover provided for the first time. Taxonomic acts are performed for Lonomia achelous (Cramer, 1777) (stat. rev.), Lonomia diabolus Draudt, 1929 (stat. rev.) and Copaxa simson bireni Bénéluz, 2008 (stat. nov.). Eight additional Saturniidae are newly recorded for French Guiana: Paradaemonia andensis (Rothschild, 1907); Lonomia parobliqua Brechlin, Meister & Mielke, 2011; Hylesia (Hylesia) discifex Draudt, 1929; Hylesia (Hylesia) moronensis moronensis Lemaire, 1976; Hyperchiria carabobensis Brechlin & Meister, 2010; Cerodirphia siriae Brechlin & Meister, 2011; Dirphia fraterna (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1874) and Homoeopteryx major Jordan, 1924. Between 1989 and 2021, the number of saturniid species known from French Guiana increased by about 40%; it is established here at 199 species.
